Curatorial Practice / Experimental Field
Co-founder and curator of Experimental Field, since 2016
Experimental Field was founded in Moscow in 2016 by Grisha Mumrikov and Ira Tsykhanskaya. Today the platform brings together around 80 artists, musicians, curators, and researchers based in different countries. It develops exhibitions, performances, sound projects, and interdisciplinary programmes, and works mainly with site-specific projects and unconventional spaces:
independent art spaces, industrial buildings, temporarily occupied venues, a former military fortress, a cave, an abandoned settlement, an active wind farm. Since 2016 Experimental Field has presented projects in Russia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Germany.

About Grisha Mumrikov
Grisha Mumrikov works with sound, photography, video, installation, and site-specific performance. Trained as a clarinetist and later as a documentary photographer, he performs on clarinet, bass clarinet, and electronics and composes for film, opera, and audiovisual projects.
His work deals with dialogue, collective perception, memory, and displacement, and with how an artistic form takes shape between people, space, landscape, and time. Most of his projects are built on open compositional systems: the score sets the rules and the material, and the performers, the space, and the audience decide the final form. Music, video, architecture, and environment carry equal weight within a single structure; none of them serves as a backdrop for the others. He treats collaboration itself as a medium.
His photographs show deserted places between wasteland and wilderness, and people and animals at the edge of things: solitary, sometimes marked, but with their dignity intact. They read as documentary at first glance and on closer inspection turn out to be composed, working with allusion and metaphor; loneliness, death, and escape are recurring themes. The work is built to raise questions, not to deliver a message. Curatorial writing on it has linked it to the Moscow Conceptualists, the documentaries of Werner Herzog, and photographers such as Alec Soth and Taryn Simon.
In 2026 his two-part project Fragile Homes. Migrating Landscapes (with Yulia Mashkova), sculptures and a video projection on the palace façade, was shown in Karlsruhe within the UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts programme and the Schlosslichtspiele light festival and received the dm-Award. The same year he realised electrofield, a six-hour performance in an active wind farm in North Rhine-Westphalia. Earlier site-specific performances took place in Montenegro (2024) at the ruins of the Roman city of Doclea, in a cave near Cetinje, and at the Goražda Fortress.
His work has been presented in Germany, Austria, Italy, Hungary, Serbia, Montenegro, Turkey, Norway, and Russia, including the 5th Moscow International Biennale for Young Art, BursaFotoFest, O.Z.O.R.A Festival, Signal Festival, and ARS HORTUS.
In 2016 he co-founded, together with Ira Tsykhanskaya, the independent artistic and curatorial platform Experimental Field, which he continues to run and curate.
